News & Notes

There’s more to Global Hug Your Kids Day than just giving your kiddos a hug or two. If you want to celebrate today, here are some fun ideas to get you started.

Residents at David & Margaret Youth and Family Services have a lot of fun during summer. We're always looking to add to their fun with donations of equipment and tickets, as well as volunteers with special recreational skills.

What happens when your child is a adopted, and adopted from foster care, without a clear history of their past? They have no photos, no memorabilia, and no family stories to share. They don’t have red hair like grandma Pat or a wiry frame like papa Joe. Often, we do not know about their past or even if they have bio siblings. They are our child, a very important part of our family tree, but they are an equally important part of another family tree - one we don’t know much about. It is complicated, and it is important to represent the whole of who they are. A single tree is not enough.

“It was one of the best places I ever stayed. My sister and I learned life skills like how to budget and how to spend money, how to look for housing, a job, even how to cook. Not only that, but we got experience with working – my sister in the store and me in the cafeteria. They deposited money in savings accounts for us to have in case of an emergency. They also gave us an allowance, which meant so much to me. I’m a saver.”
