Meet Susan Hume: D&M Board Member

Welcome back to our "meet the board" blog post series. We hope you enjoy learning about our leaders, and discovering a bit about who they are and what led them to lead the organization during this transformative time. Today's interview is with board member and La Verne resident Susan Hume who has been on the board and served as treasurer since 2018.

How did you first learn about David & Margaret?

I’m a life-long United Methodist, and I’ve been involved in United Methodist Women my entire adult life.  I’ve been a member of Claremont United Methodist Church for over 40 years, which has a very close relationship with D&M.  I’ve also been involved with many service projects for D&M over the years.

Why did you decide to join the D&M Board?

Many of my friends at Claremont UMC have served on the boards of D&M and the Joan Macy School. When I came off of the Board of the International Christian Scholarship Fund after 18 years, I was immediately asked by Bob Dalton, current board president and a good friend of mine, to join D&M.  I couldn’t turn him down! Seriously, being on the board of D&M perfectly combines my professional expertise with my devotion to UMW and my strong support of the mission of D&M.  I also am a 40 year resident of La Verne!

What is your current occupation (or what position did you retire from)?

I’m the Assistant Superintendent of Business for the Bonita Unified School District, which is the local school district of San Dimas and La Verne.  I have been a school district CBO for 20 years. Before that I was in public accounting, working with not-for-profits and school districts.

What is an accomplishment you are particularly proud of?

Professionally I ran two successful bond campaigns for Glendora U.S.D., and oversaw a 10 year, $140 million Facilities Master Plan implementation which involved all 10 school sites in the District. Personally I’m so proud of my 2 wonderful children, Eddie and Janet (both Bonita USD graduates!)

Do you have a quote or saying that motivates or inspires you?

You must create your own world.  I am responsible for my world.  - Louise Novelson

Do you have any hobbies or unique interests?

Traveling with my husband of 40 years, Ed Hume. Reading, genealogy, going to the movies and the theatre (pre-covid, of course!)

Where did you grow-up?  Where is home now?

My father’s job at Household Finance transferred him around quite a bit so I grew up all over the US, but I have lived in La Verne/San Dimas since I was in high school (I’m a San Dimas High School alum). Ed and I live in our dream home, a 1917 craftsman in old town La Verne (3rd street – just a little over a mile from D&M)

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

I think I am so ordinary, I should be a spy, I blend into a crowd very easily! I’m very active in my church; I’m the treasurer, and I also am the convener of my UMW Circle. I have held many leadership positions over the years.  But the thing I love best is teaching Sunday School, Ed and I have been doing that since our son was 10 months old and he turns 40 next year!

What skills/expertise do you bring to the D&M Board?

I’m a CPA with many years of experience working with educational institutions, children and youth, and not-for-profit agencies.  I’ve also held leadership positions in many organizations.  I love working with a team to accomplish good things.  And I totally believe in David and Margaret!
