Fine Wines: A Feature of Our Annual Gala

Fine Wines: A Feature of Our Annual Gala

David & Margaret Youth and Family Services is honored to be one of the local charities supported by Jerry D. Mead's New World International Wine Competition, which for many years has donated fine wines to accompany dinner at our annual gala. This year, the event will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, and tickets are still available. We are grateful to Jody Tillery Gmeiner for facilitating the donation.

Jerry D. Mead, a well-known syndicated wine columnist, publisher, and consultant, wanted to establish a wine competition that, for the first time in America and perhaps the world, would pit the best wines from each price class against each other resulting in a Best of Variety award. At the urging of partner Bill Anthony, the first Jerry D. Mead's New World International Wine Competition" was held in 1991.

One of the original three founders of NWIWC, Eileen Tillery, partnered with Mead and Anthony began the wine tasting portion of the National Orange Show, which evolved into a competition. Together they began their own competition, and 25 years later, we still have Jerry D. Mead’s New World International Wine Competition. Open to wines produced anywhere in the world, including all of North America, Central America, and South America, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Results used to help compile statistics for the publications, noted for determining America’s most medal winning wines by actual awards allocated points: California Wine Winners, California Grapevine, and California Gold Wine List.

The incredible selection of fine wines has always been a hit with gala attendees, who are looking forward to enjoying them again on Sept. 15!
